“Because children have abounding vitality, because they are in spirit fierce and free, therefore they want things repeated and unchanged. They always say, “Do it again”; and the grown-up person does it again until he is nearly dead. For grown-up people are not strong enough to exult in monotony. But perhaps God is strong enough to exult in monotony. It is possible that God says every morning, “Do it again” to the sun; and every evening, “Do it again” to the moon. It may not be automatic necessity that makes all daisies alike; it may be that God makes every daisy separately, but has never got tired of making them. It may be that He has the eternal appetite of infancy; for we have sinned and grown old, and our Father is younger than we.”

Here’s what I decided to do for a Bible app on my phone — if anyone cares. Even though no one mentioned Olive Tree, I had seen it in the app store. So while checking out all the other recommendations, I looked into that one. The Laridian my brother mentioned is okay. But long story short, I don’t have access to the version I had on my PDA, AND I didn’t love the way the Laridian for iPhone works anyway. The one for my PDA was much better. So I ended up buying the NASB from Olive Tree because (at least for my purposes) it had by far the best/ most intuitive highlighting and note-taking options.

I did also get YouVersion (although it took a while to find). I mean… it IS free! And all those versions have already come in quite handy. For example: this is not my favorite way to use access to tons of versions, but if you have the Message and any other “regular”/ “real” version, I invite you to read 2 Samuel 22:25 and tell me if they are saying the same thing.

So that’s been interesting.

And I also found a thing called “Bible Memory Verses.” It is a tool designed to aid in memorizing verses. It will give you tests, and you can record your voice saying the verse so you can listen to it, and things like that. It’s free, so I thought, “Why not?”

So there ya go. I’m loaded up with Bible apps. Now… to use them!

Potential “TMI” ahead — you’ve been warned.

Both boys today let me in on the fact that sometimes they have to potty at the same time — and so, they do! And it gets even better because they often have “pee-pee wars.” I bet any of you can figure that out on your own. You’re all a pretty swift bunch.

I just had to nod, walk away, and bust a gut so they wouldn’t see me. I had no idea.

When Caleb was born the elder in our class at church told me that it would be great if every boy could have a brother. I wonder if this is what he meant. I kind of feel like my little brother was cheated somehow….

So I’m still not entirely thrilled with joining this century and having a smart phone. It feels decadent and a little snobby. But it does have some really cool advantages that I do enjoy. I like quite a few of the free apps I’ve found, and I’ve even been willing to pay for a couple.

But I am struggling with which Bible to get. Of course the only versions you can get for free are KJV and ASV because of copyright stuff. I don’t have a problem paying for NASB and NIV (which are the only other ones I want), but there are so many companies that make Bible apps. Who to go with!?

I have had a Palm PDA for about 9 years, and Tim got me the Laridian company’s Bible program for it. For 7 years it has been almost the only Bible I’ve taken to church because it went into my purse (or the diaper bag), didn’t weigh a ton, AND because I could highlight stuff, add bookmarks, and take notes! Awesome. I have loved it. Now, because technology moves on whether I like it or not, and because my PDA is on its last leg, AND because Steve Jobs (rest in soul…) was such a control freak, I can not transfer AAAALLLLLLLLL of those Highlights and Notes and Bookmarks from my Palm to my iPhone. Even if I use the Laridian iPhone app, I still have to start all over. (To be fair to Steve, I think I’d be starting over even if I had an Android or Blackberry or what-have-you.) This makes me sad. But in any case, I want to find a replacement.

I want an app where I can easily highlight, bookmark, take notes, and any other cool feature they want to throw at me. The biggest key is I want it to be easy. I’m bad with technology. I don’t mind playing with stuff a little to figure it out and make it work for me. BUT! If I practically have to go to the help page every time I want to do something because there are so many steps or it’s just not very intuitive, forget it. My UX brother knows what I mean. :-) (Partly cuz he knows how very pathetic I am with tech!)

SOOOOO…. any suggestions? Tell me the app that I will fall in love with and use for about 9 years, before having to start all over again. Thank you.

Sunday I woke up with a horrible headache at 5:30. It was so bad I was a bit nauseous. Took drugs, crawled back into bed, hoped the next 45 min. would make it all better before I had to get up to get everyone around for church. It did not. Informed Tim I wasn’t sure I’d be making church that day and went back to sleep for 15 min. At that point Ethan was by my side of the bed informing me that Caleb was lying on the floor in their room vomiting. Oh goody.

So Caleb and I spent some “quality time” in front of the TV being pathetic most of the day; except that I did, of course, have the privilege of washing sheets, cleaning the floor, and cleaning a different spot on the floor and the couch later in the morning. (Tim WAS a bit rushed getting out the door, or he would have done it.) But yes, I mostly watched TV and kind of prayed for relief. or death. and that my nausea would be kept at bay while I dealt with the nastiness.

Well anyway, at one point my sweet baby crawled into my lap to snuggle and said, “Mommy, I want you to hold me forever…” <cue melting of my heart, until he paused and said…> “until this commercial is over.”

Let’s say someone you know gets a huge kick out of singing along with Charlie Daniels and his band while they tell a strange but great story about a boy named Johnny beating the devil in a fiddling contest. Maybe this person enjoys the ditty so much that she’s been able to sing every single word right along with Charlie since high school. And let’s say that when it came on the radio today she was SO excited to hear it, because it had been a long time; but she still remembered every word. Now let’s say that this same person, whom you MIGHT know, couldn’t finish singing said song because she got all choked up and teary-eyed in the middle of the chorus. Choked up during “Devil Went Down To Georgia” y’all!!! Come. ON!!!

Would you say that person was having some serious hormonal imbalances?

I would.

I had no intention of watching the 9/11 stuff on TV, or doing much of anything that would make me think too much about that day. It may be an immature response, but right now I don’t especially feel like setting myself up to cry and be sad for the 10th year in a row about this. My 91 year old grandfather passed only 10 days ago, and we just got back from his funeral on Wed. I am still thinking about him, my grandmother, my mom, and the rest of us. (More about Grandpa in another post.) So I didn’t really want to cry some more.

I have not forgotten. How could a person forget? You don’t. You add it to the list of things that answer the question: “Where were you when…?” (“…the Challenger exploded?” ”…the OKC bombing happened?” ”…Kennedy was shot?” {if you’re old enough} etc.) I’ve talked to the kids about it today and everything. I’m not trying to ignore the anniversary, just trying to mitigate the pain/ discomfort.

And then I saw on someone else’s blog a video of Alan Jackson singing “Where Were You When the World Stopped Turning?” I knew better. But I watched it anyway. Whoever wrote that song (Jackson, or someone else) captured so many of the emotions and responses people had that day and in the days following. Such a good song, and beautifully written. In case you’re wondering, I was “teaching a class full of innocent children;” and yes, that line gets me every time.

So I’ve done it to myself, and I know it. But I’ll tell you this: no matter how much I like the song, I am NOT going to look up and watch a video of Garth Brooks singing about how the world will not change him.

Maybe I’ll leave that for next April 19th.

So in the interest of full disclosure I should probably mention that they just came up the stairs for bed– JUST NOW, after me bragging on them — crying and mad at each other. So no, they are not angels. But they typically are sweet brothers.
