On the last post I was asked, “What IS an old-fashioned trash truck?”

So!  Here’s some info that everyone who deals with Caleb may find useful.

“Old-fashioned trash trucks” are the ones that require the garbage men to get out, pick up the trash barrels, dump them into the back of the truck, and set them back on the sidewalk.

This is compared to what picks up our trash: “side-loader trash trucks.”  They have the robotic arm coming out from the side of the vehicle that the man controls from the cab of the truck.

AND THEN there are the “front-end loader trash trucks.”  These are the ones that pick up the big dumpsters found at businesses and churches, etc.  The arms are more like a fork lift, and the dumpsters have to be raised OVER THE CAB of the truck to be dumped.  Very impressive!  And huge!

Finally!  We have the “semi-truck trash cans!”  Caleb has only recently noticed that there are some dumpsters out there that are too large for even the “front-end loaders.”  He asked how they get emptied.  I told him how a special semi-truck has to come with a part that kind of slides down.  Then something has to hook on to the dumpster and pull it onto the truck, so the semi can take it to the dump.  I tell ya — if that kid ever gets to see one of those huge dumpsters get picked up, we will hear about it forever!

There ya go.  Consider yourselves educated.

Me: Guess what? I LOVE you! <kiss, kiss, kiss on a sweet little face>

Caleb: Guess what?  I LOVE old-fashioned trash trucks!  <run away to play with said objects of his adoration>

…sigh…

Nevermind

Ethan: Mommy, guess what?

Me: What?

E: Well… never mind… I really don’t want to hurt your feelings.  So never mind.

Me: Well now I’ve GOT to know what’s on your mind.  I’ll do my best to not feel bad.

E: I was just thinking that in only TWO YEARS (pause, pause, pause) you (pause) will be (pause) FORTY!

Yup.  I felt a little bit bad; but didn’t let him know it.
