New Smell of Christmas
Monday January 24th 2011, 9:56 pm
I’m WAY behind on the Xmas blogging. Probably will never catch up entirely. But I have to share that I think I’ve found the new smell of Christmas for our house. Yes, on years when I’m really on the ball I plan on doing cookies and maybe peanut brittle and other delectable delights intended to increase people’s girth. BUT! My current plan is to ALWAYS (try to) make GRANOLA! Oh BOY, does that stuff smell wonderful while it’s baking! It makes me think of the mountains. I can almost picture myself in a log cabin in the high country, with the wind and snow howling outside and a fire blazing inside…. A wolf calls to his pack. A hungry bear sniffs at the door. A cougar screams in the night…. But me and mine? We’re fine. Because we’ve got our granola!
Okay, maybe not really — well, maybe just a little.

Fresh from the oven, cooling on paper bags, with dried fruit just added.
Credit is due to my Aunt Mary (Mom’s sister) who has made this delight for years, and who gladly shared the recipe with me.
By the way, yes. I am totally aware that this opens me up to all kinds of ”granola/ flower child/ Boulder” jokes. And for once — I. Don’t. Care. My love of the granola cannot be tainted by the unfortunate fact that I grew up so close to a place known for its “fruits, nuts, and flakes.”
Another reason I don’t “FB”
Sunday January 23rd 2011, 3:18 pm
Today, the new FaceBook Privacy setting called “instant personalization” goes into effect.
The new setting shares your data with non-FaceBook sites and it is automatically set to ‘enabled.’
To fix this go to Account> Privacy settings> Apps and Websites> Instant Personalization> edit settings and UNCHECK “enable.”
Right when you click on Instant Personalization edit settings – a video pops up and looks like you are in the wrong spot, scroll down under it…
BTW, if your friends don’t do this, they will be sharing info about you as well.
Even though I don’t “FB,” thanks to Simple Saving Savvy and A Thrifty Mom for mentioning it.
Good grief.

Lunch today was very “sophisticated.” Ham and cheese on crackers. Oranges. Milk/ water. The kids prefer their cracker sandwiches plain, but I like a little spicy brown mustard. (Tim had gone for a run, so he’s not part of this story.)
As I was doctoring up my crackers Caleb asked, “Mommy, do any peoples like mustard on their oranges?”
“Ummm… probably. Probably some of the people on Food Network, but I think it does not sound very good.”
“I do! I like it!”
“Really? You want to try it? Okay.” My thought was: he likes oranges anyway, but why discourage his discovery of a possibly new yummy way to eat something healthy? So I squirted a little puddle of it on his plate.
Verdict?
LOVED IT! Go figure. So if you babysit the child, and he wants mustard w/ oranges… he’s not kidding.
Normal
Thursday January 20th 2011, 10:31 pm
Standing in the kitchen after sending the children upstairs to begin bedtime procedures I hear, “Mommeeee! Ethan not being NORMAL!”
Oh dear. We ambled up the stairs, curious about the “abnormality.” Tim got there first and quickly shouted, “Catherine! You gotta see this!”
What did I see? Caleb and Ethan sword fighting in the hall with Ethan totally naked. Yup. Looked pretty “normal” to me.
qavah

From Tim last night: ”Sometimes you can’t solve a problem. You just endure it.”
Yup. But not alone or in a static state (that’s not what he meant, by the way).
“qavah — (kuh-vaw’), Heb. — to look for, wait patiently with expectation, hope, expect, look eagerly”
Lamentations 3:25 The LORD is good to those who wait for Him, To the person who seeks Him.
Psalm 130:5-6: “I wait for the LORD, my soul does wait, And in His word do I hope. My soul waits for the Lord more than the watchmen for the morning; Indeed, more than the watchmen for the morning,” This is comparing waiting on the Lord to the night guards of the city who watched time pass in anticipation of dawn when they would be released from duty. The coming of the dawn was certain, but not without the passage of time.
Psa. 27:14 Wait for the Lord; Be strong, and let your heart take courage; Yes, wait for the Lord.
Psalm 39:7 And now, Lord, for what do I wait? My hope is in Thee.
Jer. 14:22 Are there any among the idols of the nations who give rain? Or can the heavens grant showers? Is it not You, O Lord our God? Therefore we hope (Hebrew = qavah, wait, look to, hope) in Thee, For You are the one who has done all these things.
ON THE FLIP SIDE:
Psalm 52:6-7 And the righteous will see and fear, And will laugh at him, saying, 7 Behold, the man who would not make God his refuge, But trusted in the abundance of his riches, And was strong in his evil desire.
Prov. 14:12 There is a way which seems right to a man, but its end is the way of death.
Jeremiah 10:23 O Lord, I know that the way of man is not in himself, it is not in man who walketh to direct his way.
Psalm 37:7-9 Rest in the LORD and wait patiently for Him; Do not fret because of him who prospers in his way, Because of the man who carries out wicked schemes. 8 Cease from anger, and forsake wrath; Do not fret, it leads only to evildoing. 9 For evildoers will be cut off, But those who wait for the LORD, they will inherit the land.
BACK TO THE GOAL (a perennial favorite — such a beautiful chapter of comfort and hope, even though previous chapters are announcing great sadness to come! God still wants His people to know there is comfort and hope, because He’s in charge.)
Isaiah 40: 27 Why do you complain, Jacob? Why do you say, Israel, my way is hidden from the LORD; my cause is disregarded by my God”?
28 Do you not know? have you not heard? The LORD is the everlasting God, the Creator of the ends of the earth. He will not grow tired or weary, and his understanding no one can fathom.
29 He gives strength to the weary and increases the power of the weak. 30 Even youths grow tired and weary,
and young men stumble and fall; 31 but those who hope/ wait/ qavah in the LORD will renew their strength. They will soar on wings like eagles; they will run and not grow weary, they will walk and not be faint.
AND TO THE EXILES IN BABYLON, another message of hope that required some ACTIVE WAITING:
Jer. 29: 11 For I know the plans I have for you,” declares the LORD, “plans to prosper you and not to harm you, plans to give you hope and a future. 12Then you will CALL ON ME and come and PRAY TO ME, and I will listen to you.13 You will SEEK ME and find me when you seek me with all your heart. 14 I will be found by you,” declares the LORD, “and will bring you back from captivity.[b] I will gather you from all the nations and places where I have banished you,” declares the LORD, “and will bring you back to the place from which I carried you into exile.”
I KNOW I NEED TO WORK HARDER TO:
Psalm 46:10, “Cease striving (“be still”) and know that I am God …”
